LOCAL SKILLS

ROSE looks to develop skills in the local community. They are particularly promoting activities where products or skills can attract overseas interest, for example in the cases of the local crafts, and in so called 'outsourcing'.

Craft Projects

ROSE has set up craft workshops for local people. It is hoped that a market can be found either at local towns and/or overseas for locally produced crafts made from local materials. The development of such skills could enable local people to earn income from a source and foster the inherent creativity of the people.

To date it has been possible to sell greetings cards through ROSE's network of volunteers. To find out how you could purchase greetings cards, go to the section of the website.

Outsourcing
ROSE is also researching opportunties for 'outsourcing'. There are a number of highly educated people within Kanda, and by connecting them with overseas companies they could use their skills to supplement their income. This may help stop the 'drain' of such people away from the rural areas and into the cities with their better IT facilities and earning potential.

In November 2004, ROSE was able to purchase its own IT facilities, including PC, printer/copier/scanner and a web camera. It is hoped that these can be used by local people in this way, and interested overseas parties are being sought.
